Instead of spending my summer tanning, swimming and texting, I decided to go to a place where my internet is down for days at a time, I can’t drink the water for fear of a parasitic infection, and there is absolutely no texting. I am spending the first six weeks of my summer in Accra, Ghana in a study abroad program. Accra is one of the most advanced cities in West Africa and while I feel like I’ve landed in a technologically primitive environment, the city is quite progressive. While here, I’ll be studying African journalism and media. I’ll also get to do some reporting of my own on various, social, cultural and political issues. But more importantly, I get to be a college student which means partying, shopping, eating way more food than I ever should and unfortunately, studying. After being in Accra for six days, I am just beginning to experience cosmopolitan Ghana. By the end of my time spent here, I should know a little about what it’s like to be a white girl in Africa.
